Volumetric analysis is used to determine the value of a substance by using the volume of a known substance within the compound.
This process, also known as titrimetric analysis, is most commonly used
by chemists to quantify unknown concentrations in chemical reactions.
The process of volumetric analysis
was developed by the French chemist Jean-Baptiste Alfred Dumas to
identify the concentration of nitrogen in biological compounds. He
applied the method by burning a fragment of the compound to convert the
nitrogen to gas and allow it to build up in a graduated cylinder. Since
Dumas' development of volumetric analysis in the mid-19th century,
chemists have adapted the process for nearly all chemical compounds.
